How to do a DirecTV dish removal?

Step 1: Locate the Satellite Dish

If it is on the roof, like most cases, plant a ladder against your house's side, making sure it holds up sturdy. Climb up and locate its two main parts: the dish assembly and the mounting bracket.

Step 2: Remove the Cable

The dish hook up is composed of cables connecting your dish to the inside of your home. Remove this connection before proceeding with the metal parts.

At the end of the satellite dish's LNB arm, loosen and pull out the two small Phillips head screws.

With some DirecTV dishes, you'll find this a breeze as they have a lever that can easily release the LNB when pulled down.

A plastic housing holds the cables in place. With an adjustable wrench, loosen these cables, cut any ties, and carefully pull the wires away from the dish.

Step 3: Remove the Dish

To remove the dish properly, you first have to unbolt the footplates.

Loosen the bolts and nuts connecting it to the mounting bracket with the necessary tools. For DirecTV, nuts are 1/2″, while for Dish Network, they are 7/16″.

Gently lift the dish from the mount as to not bend the reflector and its other parts that can still be recycled.

Step 4: Remove the Footplate

Since the plate is attached to the roof, removing this part is crucial. This is one reason why some prefer to keep it rather than remove the satellite dish to prevent roof damage.

Unscrew the bolts attaching the plate to the roof.

With a crowbar, lift the plate up as gently as possible. This will require some strength, which is difficult to control with caution.

Step 5: Fill in the Roof

As a result of the footplate removal, you might need to fill some holes with tar or silicone to prevent any experience with leaks.

Step 6: Re-installing the Dish

In case you will have a new dish installed, don't mind filling the holes on your roof.

You can re-install a satellite dish at the same location. Just make sure the lag bolts can still be securely fastened, and the service available given the same conditions.

At this part, it would be best to contact a roofer, technician, or the satellite service provider to make sure you get a picture and stable signal. This, of course, comes with extra cost.
